On occasion an all liquid diet can be prescribes to help in extreme obesity related cases. This type of diet can help with the initial required weight loss, however, unless the patient is educated on, and implements, a healthy lifestyle change the weight is almost always going to return shortly after the liquid program is ceased. In these extreme cases that always require a doctor's supervision the liquid diet is only the first step on a long road to a healthier weight and not indented as a along tern solution.
Very few if any doctors or dieticians would recommend an all-liquid diet to help an individual with general weight loss. It is however an essential procedure prior to undergoing several medical procedures, such as colonoscopy. The liquid diet serves several functions including: flushing the bowels and relieving strain on the digestive system. The average length of time an individual would need to be on this pre-op, dependant on the procedure required, is between 2-3 days. In some cases, such as following bariatric surgery, post-op requires staying on the diet for up to 10 days.
One concern regarding this liquid diet is the lack of proteins, fiber and essential minerals that we all need for energy and a healthy body. This system is simply not a realistic long-term method to reduce weight. Instead of a complete meal replacement with liquid, it would be advisable and likely more productive in terms of healthy weight loss, to substitute some meals with a protein or juice drink. This will only work however, if it is part of a complete weight management program that takes into account caloric intake, a well balanced diet and exercise.
